Adelaide-based creative agency SAUCE has launched the second phase of Spot the Harm. Stop the Harm for the Department of Human Services, through the Government Advertising and Insights Hub

The campaign launched in time for Gambling Harm Action Week, which started on 25 October, and runs across linear TV, BVOD, radio, outdoor, social and digital.

Phase two is aimed at all South Australians, with a skew toward young men who use betting apps, and haven't realised they may be experiencing gambling harm.

Rather than focusing on the financial impacts of gambling, the new work looks at the early signs of harm - changes in mood, losing focus at work, and the impact on relationships.

Avoiding stigma and judgement was an important consideration in developing the creative. Research showed that shame can push gambling further underground, so all characters are placed in relatable, every-day situations that help identify the early, lesser-known signs of gambling harms.

"As highlighted in recent coverage, gambling harm often impacts much more than a person's finances. We frequently hear that some of the first signs of gambling harm can be changes in mood, concentration, relationships and overall wellbeing. That's why phase two of ‘Spot the Harm. Stop the Harm’ focuses on helping the community identify those impacts early and encouraging them to reach out for support if gambling is starting to affect their lives,"

said Rory Spreckley, Manager, Gambling Harm Support SA.

"These are moments young blokes will recognise from their own day to day,"

said David Ormston, Creative Director of SAUCE.

"Watching from the outside, the signs are pretty obvious. But when you're in the moment, they're easy to miss. We wanted to give people that outside view, so they can spot the early signs in themselves."

The new work builds on phase one, after which 61% of people who saw the campaign took a positive step toward minimising their experience of gambling harms, and 38% of those spending $100 or more a month on gambling cut down.

Support is available at gamblingharmsupport.sa.gov.au or through the Gambling Helpline on 1800 858 858.
